HIE — hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy — is a brain injury that happens when a baby's brain does not get enough oxygen or blood flow around the time of birth. Many parents never hear the term. What they remember is the NICU, the cooling blanket, the seizures, or the therapy appointments that came later.

If your baby went to the NICU, received cooling treatment, had seizures, was later diagnosed with cerebral palsy, or needs a feeding tube, it is worth having the records checked.

Therapeutic hypothermia — a cooling blanket or mattress used to lower a newborn's body temperature for roughly 72 hours to protect the brain after oxygen loss. Hospitals only use it when they believe a brain injury may have occurred, so it is one of the clearest signs in the record.

Texas law treats county, hospital-district, state-owned and charity hospitals differently from private ones, and claims against them face far stricter limits. Knowing the hospital tells the firm early whether a case can move forward.
